Liesia Ross - Academics and Life Skills - Hartford Job Corps Center

Liesia Ross

is Hartford Job Corps Center’s HSE/GED and Math instructor. She started her time with Job Corps nearly 10 years ago as a substitute teacher, while working two part-time positions and attending school full time. She now holds a master’s degree in management and organizational leadership, and most of her career prior to Job Corps was in management positions in libraries and retail environments. Liesia enjoys helping her students achieve their goals to obtain their GED and defeat their fears of math, all while creating an engaging and meaningful experience at the Hartford Job Corps Center.

Mary Roane - Academics and Life Skills - Hartford Job Corps Center

Mary Roane

is the Literacy instructor at the Hartford Job Corps Center. She has a bachelor’s degree in English and a master’s degree in theater. Previously, Mary taught English and theater in a variety of settings, including high schools and community college. Mary incorporates her love of reading into the classroom by amassing a wide variety of books and genres for students to enjoy. She also institutes a quiet, “free reading” segment during class, when students read a book of their choice. Mary loves working with students and watching them grow and succeed.

Zulma Serrano - Academics and Life Skills - Hartford Job Corps Center

Zulma Serrano

has been the Driver’s Education instructor at Hartford Job Corps Center since May 2018. Zulma is licensed with the Connecticut Department of Motor Vehicles and is accredited to teach and certify potential license holders in the Drug and Alcohol Safety class, mandated by the state of Connecticut. Zulma’s passion for driving originated with her father, who was a professional driver most of his life, and now Zulma has helped hundreds of students become licensed and has been recognized as the recipient of the BIONIC award for care and compassion at Hartford Job Corps.

Sara Hughes - Academics and Life Skills - Hartford Job Corps Center

Sara Hughes

is the High School Diploma instructor at Hartford Job Corps Center. She has a master’s degree in history and social studies and secondary education. A large portion of her career was within the public school sector as support staff within special education. Sara enjoys helping her students achieve their academic and personal goals and fostering a safe and enjoyable learning environment.

Julianne Romero - Career Journey - Hartford Job Corps Center

Julianne Romero

is the ACT coordinator at the Hartford Job Corps Center. She uses her training as a certified school counselor to support students in navigating postsecondary training options and the college admissions process. Her goal is not only to help students get into and finance college, but to empower students to succeed through mentorship and skills training once they are accepted.

Scottie Jenkins - Bricklaying - Edison Job Corps Center

Scottie Jenkins

has 26 years of experience as a tradesman with the Bricklayers and Allied Craftsmen Union and has extensive knowledge of bricklaying, natural stone and restoration work. He has worked on many landmark structures including the U.S. Capitol, Empire State building and Chrysler building and participated in the cleanup at the World Trade Center site after 9/11. He joined Edison Job Corps as the Bricklaying instructor to make a difference in the lives of young people with whom he shares many similar early experiences.

Joselyn Collier - Construction - Edison Job Corps Center

Joselyn Collier

is a Building Construction Technology instructor at Edison Job Corps Center but has been with the program for nearly 10 years as a student, food services staff member, maintenance staff member and property coordinator. His knowledge of the Job Corps training program both as a student and operational staff gives him a unique perspective and an ideal background for working with students in his training area. Joselyn focuses on involving students in many hands-on projects in order to teach them the skills to be competitive and develop a strong work ethic to guarantee future success.

Carl Rowe - Electrical - Edison Job Corps Center

Carl Rowe

has been a staff member at Edison Job Corps Center for over 30 years, starting as an electrical assistant in the maintenance department and then as the supervisor of maintenance. He has now been an instructor for the Home Builders Institute Electrical Wiring training area at Edison Job Corps for the last 20 years. He holds an electrician’s license and is a certified OSHA trainer. Carl’s focus is on providing the best possible hands-on training for his students and providing all the tools necessary for them to have successful careers in the field.

Joseph Brown - Carpentry - Edison Job Corps Center

Joseph Brown

Joseph Brown, the Lead UBC/Carpentry instructor at Edison Job Corps, has been a union carpenter for over two decades. After completing his apprenticeship, he was a journeyman and foreman for various union contractors throughout New Jersey. Joseph has extensive knowledge of commercial construction carpentry and is authorized to teach OSHA, vinyl siding installation, scaffold safety, scaffold user and green building awareness courses.
